Bearing of Lines in Surveying
The bearing of Lines:
Basically bearing of a line is the horizontal angle, in which the line makes with some reference meridian or direction.
The reference direction employed in surveying may be as:
- True Meridian
- Magnetic Meridian
In the geodetic survey the true meridian is usually employed and in-plane surveys, the magnetic meridian is used.
True Meridians:
- The points of intersection of the earth's axis and the surface of the earth are known as the north geographical pole and the south geographical pole.
- The true or geographical meridian passing through a point on the earth's surface is the line in which the plane passing through the given point, and the north and south poles intersect the surface of the earth.
- Through the various stations in the true meridians are not parallel, but they converge to the poles.
- In small surveys, they are assumed to be parallel to each other.
- The horizontal angle between the true meridian and a line is called a true bearing of the line.
Magnetic Meridian:
- The angle which a line makes with the magnetite meridian is called a magnetic bearing of the line, or simply a bearing of the line.
- The direction indicated by a freely suspended d properly balanced magnetic needle, unaffected by local attractive forces is called the magnetic meridian or the magnetic north and south line.
Some other Important points:
- True meridian doesn't change over time while the magnetic meridian change through time.
- The true meridian (geographic north-south pole direction) remains constant always.
- True meridian of different places converge from the equator to the poles.
- Magnetic Declination is a horizontal angle between true meridian and magnetic meridian.
- When magnetic meridian is left side to true meridian, then Magnetic Declination is said to be negative (-Ve) or Western.
- If the magnetic meridian is to the right side of the true meridian, declination is said to the Eastern or (+Ve).
