Building stones obtained from rocks occurring in  nature are classified into:

1.     Chemical classification
2.     Geological classification
3.     Physical classification

According to chemical classification the rocks are:

Silicious rocks (Examples: Granite, Quartzite)

Argillaceous rocks (Examples: slates, Laterites)

Calcareous rocks (Examples: Lime Stone, marble)

According or geological classification rocks are classified as:

Igneous rocks (Examples: Granite, Basalt and Dolerite)

Sedimentary rocks (Examples: Gravel, sandstone, limestone, gypsum, lignite)

Metamorphic rocks  (Examples: Quartzite, Schist, Slate, Marble and Gneisses)

According to physical classification the rocks are classified as:

Stratified rocks (Examples: sedimentary rocks)

Unstratified or Anstratified rocks (Examples: Igneous rocks)

Foliated rocks (Examples: Metamorphic rocks)

Question: For a good building stone, how much is the required crushing strength or compressive strength?

Answers: The crushing strength of a stone is the load per unit area at which the stone starts cracking. It should be greater than 1000 kg per cm2 or 10 N/MM2 to ensure sufficient strength for use in construction.

Question: Which test is used to find the rate of wear of stone?
Answers: Attrition Test is done to find out the rate of wear of stones, which are used in road construction.

Question: In what solution is the stone sample placed in an Acid test?
Answers: As per the standard test procedure, the sample weighing about 5N is placed in a solution of HCl for 7 days.

Question: What is Dorry abrasion test?
Answers: Dorry Abrasion Testing Machine is used to determine the resistance of aggregate to wear by abrasion.
