Chain surveying should include the following equipment's, which are:

The chain survey may be done by using the following steps:
Reconnaissance:
- The preliminary inspection of the area to be surveyed.
Marking Stations:
- Having completed the reconnaissance and the index sketch, survey stations should be marked on the ground.
Reference Sketches:
- After the stations are marked, they should be referenced, i.e. Located by measurements, called ties, taken from permanent points which are definite and easily recognized such as corners of buildings or pillars, other natural features, boundary etc.
Running Survey Lines:
- Having finished the preliminary work.
- Chaining may be commenced from the baseline and carried throughout all the lines of the framework as continuously as possible.
- The routine of running a survey line consists in chaining the line and locating from it the nearby detail.
Chain Survey is Suitable when:
- Ground is fairly level and simple
- Plans are required on large scale e.g. fields
- When area is small in extent
