Offsets
- In a survey the positions of details such as boundaries. Buildings, roads, water bodies etc., are located with respect to the survey or chain lines by means of lateral measurements i.e. distance measured from the chain lines to such objects right or left of the chain lines. These lateral measurements are called offsets.
- Offsets are always taken at right angles to the chain or survey line. They are also called perpendicular or right angled offsets.
- The oblique measurements are those which were not made at right angles to the chain or survey line.
There are two kinds of offsets:
Offsets According to Direction:
- Perpendicular offset
- Oblique offset
Perpendicular Offsets
- Those distances, which are measured at right angles to the chain line from the objects is called perpendicular offsets. (you cans see on the above image).
- It is also called right offsets or rectangular offsets.
Oblique Offsets
- When the object to be located is at a long distance from the chain line or when it is an important one, such as the corner of a building or the intersection of the two adjoining properties, oblique offsets should be taken.
- They are also taken to check the accuracy of perpendicular offsets.
Offsets According to Length:
- Short offsets
- Long offsets
The offsets known as short offsets when their length is less than 15 m and called long offsets when their length is more than 15 m.
