In this chapter, you will learn

  • The various uses for instruments in drawings

Introduction of Drawing

Drawings assist us in transforming our ideas and thoughts into a finished product. Engineering industries also require and use drawings because they are required and employed at various phases of the development of an engineering product. Engineering drawing is distinct from artistic drawing, which is intended to convey aesthetic, philosophical, and abstract concepts.

Drawing Board

Soft wooden platens make up the drawing board. It is necessary to ensure that the drawing board's working surface is almost perfectly planned. The usual drawing board sizes are indicated in the table below. For engineering students, a D2 size drawing board is usually recommended.

The usual drawing board sizes are listed below.

Drawing Sheet

A drawing sheet is a piece of paper on which pencil drawings are made. Drawing sheets come in a variety of sizes, as illustrated in the table below. A2 size drawing sheets are preferred for engineering students' drawing practice. The following table shows the appropriate sizes for various drawing sheets.

Mini Drafter

This is a tool that allows you to easily draw parallel or sloped lines. A clamping mechanism, which is an integral part of the instrument, is used to secure it to the top left corner of the drawing board.

Compasses

Compasses are usually divided into two sizes: a large compass and a small spring bow compass. To create arcs or circles, use these. A needle point and a pencil point are found on each compass.
