Building Material and Concrete Technology
Concrete is a basic building material needed for many Civil Engineering projects, there is no work in civil engineering without concrete and it is a big deal to this subject, from the types of different concrete mixtures, to curing concrete, methods of recycling it and many more.
This subject deals with
- concrete and it's properties
- Admixtures and retarders
- Mix design
- Test of concrete
- Latest development in the field of civil engineering.
- Different types of concrete like, Light-Weight Concrete, Pre-packed Concrete, Polymer Portland cement concrete, Polymer impregnated concrete, Partially impregnated and surface coated concrete, Silica Fume Concrete, Fly ash Concrete, High-Performance Concrete, Fibre Reinforced Concrete etc.
Importance of concrete technology:-
Concrete is the primary ingredient or component that goes in the construction process. It's building material that we can not do without while constructing any project. In it's simplest form, concrete is made up from the mixture of binder and aggregates- FA or CA.
Different types of binding materials are used other than cement such as lime. Lime is used for lime concrete or bitumen is used for asphalt concrete, which is used for road construction.
Then the mixture (Paste) becomes hard by a series of chemical reactions called heat of hydration. It gains strength and forms like mass which is called as concrete.
In this entire process, there is one amazing trait of concrete, it is plastic and malleable, after it's newly mixed but when it hardens, it becomes strong and durable. That's why concrete is an indispensable part of the construction process. This one material can build bridges, houses, dams, highways, constructing the foundations, slabs, beams, and columns etc.
Types of concrete mix:-
There are two types of concrete mix according to their grades :-
1.Nominal mix
According to IS:456-2000 upto M20, we will go for nominal mix design.
The proportion of Cement : Fine Aggregate : Coarse Aggregate is given
M5 = 1:5:10.
M7.5 = 1:4:8
M10 = 1:3:6
M15 = 1:2:4
M20 = 1:1.5:3
2.Design mix:-
Beyond M20 we will go for design mix, which is given in IS:456-2000. We will find the ratios of Cement, FA, CA by using of design mix steps.
