What is Steel Weight Calculation?
Steel weight calculation is an important part of civil engineering and construction work. Before starting reinforcement work, engineers and contractors must calculate the exact weight of steel required for the project. This helps in cost estimation, material planning, and reducing wastage on site.
Steel Weight Formula (D²/162)
The standard formula used for calculating steel weight per meter is:
Weight (kg/m) = D² / 162
Where:
D = Diameter of steel bar in millimeters (mm)
162 = Constant value used in steel weight calculation
Example Calculation
Let’s calculate the weight of a 12mm diameter steel bar of 10 meters length.
Step 1: Use formula → D² / 162
= 12 × 12 / 162
= 144 / 162
= 0.888 kg per meter
Step 2: Multiply by total length
= 0.888 × 10
= 8.88 kg
So, total steel weight = 8.88 kg
Why Steel Weight Calculation is Important?
- Accurate cost estimation
- Material procurement planning
- Prevention of steel shortage on site
- Better project management
